Main Activities
- Providing information regarding the world's refugee issues and motivating the public to be concerned with the plight of refugees.
- Supporting activities conducted by UNHCR and related organizations, such as NGO/NPO partners.
- Fundraising from the general public.
Background
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)was established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1950. The UNHCR commenced its operations from 1951 and it is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect, assist, educate refugees and to resolve refugee problems worldwide from a humanitarian perspective.
UNHCR's activities are funded by voluntary contributions, principally from governments but also from private corporations, organizations and individuals. However, funds to implement effective actions to support refugees are constantly in a shortage. Sometimes the UNHCR is forced to scale down or in some cases suspend some of the planned programs.
Hopefully, the private sector will play a more important role in raising funds for UNHCR. Following the establishment of national committees in the United States, Australia, France and Spain, Japan Association for UNHCRwas established in October 2000, as a NPO (non-profit organization) and it serves as the official recipient of donations from the private sector.
