Main Activities

  • Providing information regarding the world's refugee issues and motivating the public to be concerned with the plight of refugees.
  • Supporting activities conducted by UNHCR and related organizations such as NGO/NPO partners.
  • Fundraising from the general public.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide.

UNHCR's activities are funded by voluntary contributions, principally from governments but also from private corporations, organizations and individuals. However, funds to implement effective action to support refugees are constantly at a shortage. Sometimes, UNHCR is forced to scale down or in some cases suspend some of its planned programs due to this shortage. It is clear that support from the private sector will continue to play an important role in raising funds for UNHCR. Following the establishment of national committees in the United States, Australia, France and Spain, Japan Association for UNHCR was established in October 2000, as a NPO (non-profit organization) in Japan, and it serves as the official recipient of donations to UNHCR from the private sector.
